Physical Features

One of the interesting things about the Chow Chow breed is that they have a number of distinct physical features including the following:

  • The Chow Chow’s tongue is quite unique due to its blue-black color.
  • Due to the Chow Chow’s large ruff of hair behind their heads, they sometimes almost look lion like – which is another one of their unique features.
  • The Chow Chow is also quite a large dog. For instance, a Chow Chow will grow to an approx height of 18 –22 inches (46 – 56 centimeters) and will weigh approx. 45 – 70 pounds (20 – 32 kilograms).

Another aspect of the Chow Chows physical appearance is their coat. This coat can be either rough or smooth in texture. It can also come in a range of colors including cream, blue, red, and black chow chow to name only a few.

Personality

If the Chow Chow breed does not have a strong alpha leader then they can become a little stubborn, strong-willed and hard to manage. Because of this, it’s vital that you become the alpha leader of your household so that this does not happen. The Chow Chow is also quite a protective dog and can be very wary of strangers. However, once they get past this initial wariness then they become extremely loving, loyal and affectionate. In fact, they will probably end being your friend for life.

The Chow Chow Life Span

The Chow Chow breed will live approximately 15 years.

Exercise

Chow Chows can sometimes be a little lazy. Therefore, it’s important that they get some form of exercise every single day. If you took them for a daily walk then this would suffice.

Living Conditions

You can still own a Chow Chow if you live in an apartment or home without a big yard. But, if this is the case, then it’s even more vital that you exercise your Chow Chow daily.

Health Problems

All dogs are prone to certain health problems; the Chow Chow breed included. Just some of these health problems that they are prone to include:

  • Eye problems.
  • Hip dysplasia.
  • Stomach cancers.
  • Ear problems.
