Are you looking for information on training a Chow Chow? Well then keep on reading as the following tips and advice may be exactly what you’re looking for!
Patience is a must
When training a Chow Chow, you may sometimes get frustrated. However, try to get through this frustration and remain as patient as you can. To get you through these moments, just think of what you are working towards – having a well-trained and obedient Chow Chow as part of your family.
Take Control
Proving your alpha leadership is an important part of training a Chow Chow. This means showing your Chow Chow that you are the one in charge of the pack or family. By doing this your Chow Chow will be more likely to listen to you during the training process. The ideal way to prove your alpha leadership position to your Chow Chow is by making sure you do everything before them. For instance, you should always eat your food before your Chow Chow. Plus, you should always walk through doors before your Chow Chow.
Use Rewards
It’s a good idea to use rewards as a means to let you’re Chow Chow know they’ve done well. For example, you could give your Chow Chow a reward when they complete the “sit” command correctly. Rewards can be anything from a tasty treat to something as simple as a little cuddle.
Bad Behavior
Sometimes your Chow Chow may misbehave like
biting problems. If this occurs it is vital that you remain calm. If you need to tell them off do so by saying “no” in a firm but calm voice. However, you must never use hitting or yelling as a form of punishment towards your Chow Chow. This may scare your pet making them anxious and in turn this could be very detrimental to your training.
Repetition
You will need to repeat everything over and over again before your Chow Chow will fully understand what they need to do. For instance, you will need to repeat the “down’ command to your Chow Chow numerous times before they will understand what it means.
Consistency
It’s important to be consistent when training a Chow Chow. This means standing by your rules and commands. For instance, if you decide on a set rule where your Chow Chow is forbidden from your bedroom, then stick to this. Do not let them into said room as a special treat. As with your commands, if you choose “sit” stick with this. Do not change it to something different later on. Inconsistency like this will just be confusing for your poor Chow Chow and it may even threaten all the hard work you’ve put into training.
Short is Best
Try to keep training sessions short. Ideally, they should go for no longer than ten minutes. This is due to the fact that your Chow Chow may not be able to concentrate for long periods of time. However, you can have a couple of these shorter ten minutes sessions in a day.
Training a Chow Chow can be a great experience – for both you and your pet. So remember this and try to have fun during the entire training process. So what are you waiting for – start training your Chow Chow today!
